Apple TV

Your computer is right in the middle of the digital side of your life. And your television is right in the middle of your entertainment life. But what happens when you fancy watching music videos, movie trailers, video podcasts or photos on your television? The Apple TV gives you the ability to watch all this on your television.

The Apple TV is available as Apple TV 40GB and Apple TV 160GB.

Apple TV

Instead of having to sit in front of your computer or iPod to watch what you have on your iTunes, you can just hook Apple TV up to your widescreen TV and wirelessly sync your iTunes library with it. Then you can sit down, put your feet up and relax with the Apple Remote and play iTunes on your television. Now you've just changed the way you watch digital media forever!

iTunes to Apple TV, wire-free

The Apple TV connects to your TV via an HDMI port or component video and audio ports. Its built-in, superfast 802.11 wireless capability syncs your iTunes library to any Mac or PC in your house. And the best bit is that whatever is on your Apple TV stays syncronised. All changes made to your iTunes will wirelessly and automatically update your Apple TV.

What’s on TV? Whatever you want

Apple TV puts your iTunes library — including music, music videos and podcasts — plus movie trailers from Apple.com onto your television screen. As well as your digital photos from iPhoto on a Mac or Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Album on a Windows PC appear in HD, enabling you to put on a stunning big screen slideshow.

Musically inclined

Assuming the best sound system in your house is connected to your TV, why would you play your iTunes library on something else? Apple TV lets you browse and play songs and watch music videos, all on the big screen through your home cinema system.

Radio on the TV

Thanks to Apple TV, you can enjoy podcasts on your TV for the first time. Listen to your favourite audio podcasts through your entertainment system speakers and watch video podcasts from the comfort of your sofa.

Get the big picture

Apple TV brings photo slideshows off the computer and into your lounge. Sit down and relax on the sofa and view your photos in jaw-dropping high definition. With thousands of photos at your fingertips, you’ll never get bored.

All set

From the Settings menu, you can set up your screen saver, your network, or your TV resolution, as well as getting more information about your Apple TV.

It Just Fits

Easy connectivity and built-in wireless make Apple TV right at home in the middle of your home cinema system.

Plug-and-play time

Have you got an HD widescreen TV? iTunes? Assuming so then you're ready for Apple TV. Connect Apple TV to your TV, then open iTunes on your computer. iTunes wirelessly detects Apple TV and walks you through the setup process, step by simple step.

Relax and unwire

If you don’t have a wireless network, then don't worry, you can set one up easily with a wireless access point like the superfast 802.11 AirPort Extreme Base Station. Newer AirPort Extreme-enabled Macs let you create a wireless network using only your computer. And if you have a Mac or PC without built-in wireless capability, you can connect Apple TV to your network using an Ethernet cable.

One step. Great leap

Apple TV connects to your widescreen HD TV via an HDMI cable. This simple connection delivers both audio and video to your TV — no need for lots of messy cables.

Options open

If the HDMI port is occupied by another device, say a blu-ray dvd player or DVR, or if your TV doesn’t even have an HDMI port, then you can connect to Apple TV via component video and audio. Alternatively you can even connect Apple TV’s audio to your A/V receiver via optical audio. It's not important what your entertainment system looks like, Apple TV connects quickly and easily. And seeing as Apple TV has its own power supply, there’s no unsightly power brick to hide.

What you need

  • Widescreen TV
  • Mac or PC
  • iTunes 7.1 or later
  • Wired or wireless network
  • HDMI cable or
  • Component video cables and analogue audio cables or optical audio cable

Compatible TVs

Apple TV will work with widescreen, enhanced-definition or high-definition TVs capable of 1080i, 720p, 576p and 480p resolutions. So pretty much anything.

Wirelessly in Sync

Your iPod syncronises seamlessly with iTunes. Now your Apple TV does exactly the same — wirelessly, from wherever your computer lives.

Sync through walls

Your computer is probably in your office whilst your television is probably in your living room. Apple TV connects them up using its built-in 802.11 wireless capability and your existing wireless network. Just pair Apple TV together with your computer and your music, music videos, podcasts and photos will all just sync automatically. Through the air.

One-time setup. Full-time entertainment

When you open up iTunes your Apple TV appears in your devices list, ready to sync. Just setup iTunes to sync things you haven’t watched yet. Then set it to sync your new purchases. Or just manually select what you want to watch. Same as your iPod, you can set your syncing preferences once and Apple TV automatically updates as your iTunes library changes.

Always on

Apple TV can stream content as well as sync. This means you can pair up to five computers and let friends and family stream their iTunes libraries to your TV. Apple TV can store up to 50 hours of video, ready to watch whenever you want.
